Richmond Art Works
Actions

We are active participants in the quality of life in our community.  The projects below are some of the actions we have initiated.

Buildings

In the 1960's a number of Richmond's historic buildings were covered in corrugated aluminum.
There are many theories as to why this was done, the most widely accepted
is that it created a "new" and "modern" look and would be easier for the building owners to maintain.
The reality was that it was like placing a bag over your head, and effectively removed the upper floors
from use as they became dark cells, walled off from the world.

We have removed three metal facades and are in the process of recreating the historic downtown, block by block.
There are few words to describe the rush of air and light returning to a building,
as it is released from metal bonds and comes back to life.

On September 25th with the help of Whitewater Construction,
we removed the metal facade
that had covered Sanders Jewelers for forty years.
Ralph and Vivian Himelick, the owners, have made the commitment
to bring a valuable part of Richmond history back to light.
